MOON & HONEY

Discipline

UX/UI & complex systems

A complex system for a boutique hotel built for couples — honeymoons, weddings, engagements and getaways for two — specified and designed around a single persona: the shift manager. The exercise asked for a dashboard plus two further screens of my own choosing — a study in hierarchy, functionality and leaving real options for choice at every step.

The brief

One persona: the shift manager

The exercise was to specify and design a complex hotel-management system from the ground up, focused on one persona — the shift manager, the person who actually lives in the interface for a whole day. The hotel sets the tone: Moon & Honey is a hotel for couples — honeymoons, weddings, engagements and getaways for two — so the system is not handling anonymous bookings, but arrivals with a story behind them. The aim was to work the core design principles into a single system: functionality, correct hierarchy, and real options for choice rather than one forced path. The scope was set precisely: a dashboard, plus two further screens chosen from inside the system.

The process

Aesthetics and efficiency, in one interface

The work set out to hold two things at once: a holistic, consistent interface that stays professional and inviting, and a shift manager who can simply get things done. So every decision started from the encounter itself — what has to be seen first, what can wait, which actions need to be one click away, and where the same task can legitimately be reached in more than one way. The result is a warm, calm visual world built on a cream ground and soft status colours — the same register a hotel that hosts honeymoons and weddings keeps with its guests — with the data kept clear and the priorities unmistakable.

The outcome

A dashboard, a floor plan, a room detail

Moon & Honey opens on a morning dashboard that gathers the whole shift into one view: check-in and check-out counts, hotel occupancy, a room-status breakdown, the day's tasks by priority, incoming guest requests and a timeline of today's events, where a wedding or an anniversary arrival is part of the shift. From there the rooms screen reads the hotel floor by floor as a colour-coded plan, where every room carries its status at a glance: which rooms on the floor are free, which are in cleaning, which are in maintenance and which are occupied. Spot a room in maintenance and a click opens a panel for that exact room — its type, and why it is down: suite 24, for example, is in maintenance while the air conditioner is being treated. Along the way the exercise also trained the less visible skill: thinking through a complex interface, and working it out as a team.
